Gaelic is the traditional language of Barra and all of  the Western Isles (na h-Eileanan an Iar), which are now considered to be the heart-land of Gaelic.  You will notice that many of the road signs are in Gaelic, as are the signs on some shops, the bank, and the ferry.  Most of the local people are bilingual, and you are likely to hear Gaelic spoken in the shops and bars, or around the harbour.
